Freelance visas in the UAE are offered by selected free zones (and virtual work schemes). This guide covers which zones offer freelance permits, the documentation and approval process, typical costs (license, visa, Emirates ID), and how freelance compares to a company visa. We reference free zone portals, GDRFA, and ICP.
Eligible Free Zones for Freelance Permits
Eligible free zones for freelance permits include Dubai Media City, Dubai Knowledge Park, Dubai Design District (d3), and others. Each zone has an approved list of activities for freelance. You apply for a freelance permit (not a full company license) and then for a residence visa. Check the zone’s website for current eligibility.
Documentation and Approval Process
Documentation usually includes passport, CV, portfolio or proof of experience, and sometimes a no-objection letter or proof of clients. The approval process can take a few days to a few weeks. Some zones offer fast-track. You may need to open a bank account in the zone or use an approved flexi-desk.
Costs: License, Visa, Emirates ID
Costs: the freelance permit (license) has an annual fee; add visa fees, medical, and Emirates ID. Total first-year cost varies by zone and package (e.g. AED 15,000–30,000 or more). Renewal is annual.
Freelance vs Company Visa
Freelance vs company visa: a freelance permit allows you to work as a sole practitioner under your own name or a trade name in the zone. A company license creates a legal entity and may allow more activities or employees. Choose based on your business model.
Renewal and Multiple Entry
Renewal is typically annual. You must renew the permit and the visa before expiry. Some zones allow multi-year visa options. Keep your documents and payment receipts for smooth renewal.
Using the Visa Calculator
Use our Golden Visa Calculator if you are considering a longer-term option (e.g. property or investment route) alongside or instead of a freelance visa.
