Dubai School Admissions: Timelines, Documents, and Waiting Lists

Academic Year and Application Windows. Required Documents by Grade. Expert-reviewed UAE guide. Last updated January 2026.

Applying to Dubai private schools involves knowing the academic calendar, required documents, and assessment and placement processes. This guide covers application windows, what to submit by grade, how waiting lists work, transferring between schools, and fee payment and refund policies. We reference the KHDA admissions guide and typical school policies.

Academic Year and Application Windows

The academic year in Dubai usually starts in August or September. Schools open applications months in advance (often October–January for the next year). Apply early; popular schools fill quickly. Check each school’s website for exact dates.

Required Documents by Grade

Required documents typically include the child’s passport and visa, previous school reports, transfer certificate (for certain grades), birth certificate, and parent IDs. Some schools require assessment or interview. Requirements can vary by grade and curriculum; check the school’s list.

Assessment and Placement

Assessment and placement: schools may use entrance tests, interviews, or previous reports to decide placement. Special educational needs may require additional documentation or support arrangements. Ask the school about their process and timeline.

Waiting Lists and Priority

Waiting lists: if a year group is full, you may be placed on a waiting list. Priority can depend on application date, siblings already at the school, or other criteria. Stay in touch with the admissions team and have a backup option.

Transfer Between Schools

Transferring between schools during the year is possible but may require a transfer certificate and settlement of fees at the old school. Plan ahead; mid-year places are limited. KHDA has guidelines on transfers.

Fee Payment and Refund Policies

Fee payment and refund policies vary. Many schools require a deposit or term fee in advance. Refund policies (e.g. if you withdraw) are usually in the enrolment contract. Read them before signing. Use our School Fee Calculator to plan total cost.
